Great Tip, but what if you have the textures applied to the caps of your text? It seems to break when I do this

Me too. It all works until you apply a C1 tag to your material and then only the 1st letter gets treated properly. I’ve found other tutorials online which all seem suggest that it’s impossible to do this while keep the text as live mograph text. (e.g. http://mograph.net/board/index.php?showtopic=22402).
It’s bogus, but right now it seems like you have to break the text out into extrudes and splines if you want to use a material selection.
